Japanese: 刺繡 - ししゅう

"Shi" means to sew with a needle, and "Suyu" means to add color to a garment. In other words, thread is threaded through a needle and stitched from the front and back of the fabric to create pictorial designs or patterns on the front or both sides of the fabric using various techniques. In the narrow sense, it refers to colored thread embroidery, and is the most basic technique of embroidery. In English, it is called embroidery or needle work. Variations include white thread embroidery, black thread embroidery, shadow embroidery, canvas work, embroidery that uses ribbons, cords, beads, spangles, etc. instead of thread, net embroidery that uses lace-like material with gaps instead of cloth, and tulle embroidery.

〈刺〉は針で縫うこと，〈繡〉は衣に采（いろどり）を施すこと，つまり，糸を針にとおして布地の表と裏から刺し，布の表面または表と裏の両面に，糸で絵画的な図柄や文様などをいろいろな技法で刺しあらわすことで，狭義には色糸刺繡を指し，刺繡の中で最も基本になる技法である。英語でエンブロイダリーembroidery，ニードル･ワークneedle workなどという。そのバリエーションには白糸刺繡，黒糸刺繡，シャドー刺繡，キャンバス･ワークなどや，糸の代りにリボン，コード，ビーズ，スパングルなどを使う刺繡，布の代りにすきまのあるレース状のものに刺すネット刺繡，チュール刺繡などがある。
