Ichijodani

Japanese:
Ichijodani
A long, narrow valley running north to south, created by the Ichijodani River, which flows along the western foot of Mt. Ichijo (740.9m) in the eastern part of the Fukui Plain. In the Middle Ages, the Asakura clan, who were vassals of the Shiba clan, the guardian of Echizen Province, built a castle on Mt. Ichijojo (435.8m) in this valley, and formed a castle town at the foot of the mountain. For over a century, until their downfall by Oda Nobunaga in 1573, it became the base of Echizen rule and was known as the capital of Etsunan. The Asakura clan's rule over their territory was relatively stable, and many nobles and intellectuals fled to the valley to escape the wars in Kyoto, leading to the blossoming of a brilliant culture. In 1930, the remains of the Asakura residence, Suwa residence, Nanyo-ji temple, and Nishiyama Kosho-ji temple in Ichijodani were designated as historic sites, and in 1967, part of the Nanyo-ji temple site, Eirinzuka (the grave of Asakura Takakage), the remains of the mountain castle, and the upper and lower castle gates were added to the list. In 1971, the designated area was expanded to 278 hectares, and it was named the Ichijodani Asakura Clan Ruins Special Historic Site. In 1972, the Fukui Prefectural Education Agency's Asakura Clan Ruins Research Institute was established, and investigations, excavations, and restoration work have been ongoing.
