Although they were strongly influenced by Elvis, they became popular worldwide based on rhythm and blues. In the mid-1960s, psychedelic music emerged on the West Coast of the US, inspired by the music of John Coltrane. It was combined with rock to become hard rock and progressive rock, and became immensely popular, far surpassing jazz. Until the 1960s, it was said that "rhythm and blues is for black people, and rock is for white people," and the pop music world was overwhelmingly dominated by white groups, but around the time rock guitarist Jimi Hendrix (1942-70) appeared, the black and white distinction in the music world disappeared. …
