Also written as inoko mochi. This rice cake is made on the day of the boar in the tenth month of the lunar calendar. It is called "Inoko botamochi" and in many places it is made with newly harvested rice. It is given to children who come to celebrate Inoko, and to people who help with rice planting in the spring, as a sign of gratitude for the autumn harvest. Inoko mochi has been made in the Imperial Court since the mid-9th century. It is also called genchiyo, and was given to men and ladies of the Imperial Court. It was also wrapped in brocade and hung in the four corners of the palace at night. Boar-shaped ones were also made. The ingredients are soybeans, adzuki beans, sasage (big horn beans), sesame seeds, chestnuts, persimmons, and sugar. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
