Mikasayama

Japanese: 御蓋山 - みかさやま

Also written as Mikasayama. A mountain in the eastern part of the urban area of Nara City. It is 283 meters above sea level. The mountain is mainly composed of Mikasayama andesite, and is part of the Wakakusa volcanic cone group that erupted at the northern end of the Kasuga fault scarp. It is collectively called Kasugayama along with Hanayama (Kasugayama in the strict sense) and Yoshiyama, which are connected to the east, and is covered in virgin forest. It is part of Nara Park, and has been written about in poems since the Nara period, and is famous in literature. It is often confused with Mikasayama, as Wakakusayama, which continues to the north, is commonly called Mikasayama.

三笠山とも書く。奈良市の市街地東部にある山。標高 283m。山体はおもに三笠山安山岩から成り，春日断層崖北端に噴出した若草火山岩丘群に属する。東に連なる花山 (狭義の春日山) ，芳山とともに春日山と総称され，原生林でおおわれる。奈良公園の一部で，奈良時代から歌にも詠まれ，文学的にも有名。北方に続く若草山を俗に三笠山と呼んでいるため，よく混同される。
