Located in the southwest of the Visayas, in the central Philippines, it is the fourth largest island in the Philippines. A mountain range runs from north to south, with Mount Kanlaon (2,465m) as its main peak. In modern times, sugarcane plantations were developed and it became the center of the Philippine sugar industry. However, due to a global sugar recession and repeated storm damage, starvation has become a problem for the residents. The island also produces corn, rice, and bananas. The capital is Bacolod on the northwest coast. In the 1980s, it became the base of the Communist military organization, the New People's Army (NPA). It has an area of 12,710 ^{km2 and} a population of 3.17 million (1990).
