1610‐64 Italian painter and printmaker. Born in Florence, he was the son of a sculptor, but studied printmaking under R. Cantagarina, who had studied under J. Caro. During his stay in Paris from 1639 to 1650, he traveled to the Netherlands (1646). After returning to the Netherlands, he became the teacher of Cosimo de' Medici, during which time he produced over 1,000 copperplate prints, mainly of landscapes and celebrations. In his early days, he was strongly influenced by Caro, but later he established a painting style that dynamically captured his subjects with soft brushstrokes. His pictorial effects, which make use of naturalistic depictions and perspective, were also heavily influenced by his outdoor painting style and by Dutch painters such as Rembrandt.
