An area where many temples exist within a part of an urban area. This is common in cities that originated as castle towns in the early modern period. Many temples were established in the outskirts of castle towns, but this was primarily due to policy intentions to defend the outer periphery of the castle. For example, in the case of Takada in Joetsu City, Niigata Prefecture, there are town houses to the south of the castle's outer moat, and a temple is located on the outer edge of the town, separated by rice fields.
