A deciduous shrub in the Cornaceae family (APG classification: Cornaceae). It grows to 2 meters tall. The trunk is yellowish brown. The leaves are thin, elliptical, 6-12 cm long, and have low, sharp awn-like teeth at the tip. Dioecious. In May, pale yellow flowers bloom in the center of the leaves. The name comes from the leaf's resemblance to a raft when the flowering leaves appear. The drupes are oblong, 6-7 mm long, and black when ripe. They are found in southwestern Hokkaido, Honshu, Kyushu, Okinawa, and Chugoku, and grow in the mountains and fields. The genus Acanthodes consists of three species and is distributed in Japan, China, and the Himalayas.
