Byte (English) single point tool; cutting tool

Byte (English) single point tool; cutting tool
A general term for cutting tools with a cutting edge at the end of a handle (called a shank), used as a blade on lathes, shaping machines, boring machines, planing machines, etc. Various types of cutting tools are manufactured depending on the shape, processing, and material of the workpiece. However, structurally, they can be broadly classified into (1) solid cutting tools (finished cutting tools, etc.) in which the cutting edge and shank are integrated and made of the same material, (2) tipped cutting tools in which a tip (a small piece of cutting edge) is brazed to the shank, and (3) crank cutting tools in which the tip is mechanically fixed to the shank. Because the cutting edge becomes hot, materials that are hard and wear-resistant even at high temperatures, such as carbon tool steel, alloy tool steel, high-speed steel, cemented carbide, ceramics, and diamond, are used. The term cutting tool is said to be a corruption of the Dutch word bietel.
