Amazonia (Amazon River Basin) refers to highlands formed mainly from Tertiary deposits that do not flood even at the highest water level during floods. Meaning "hard ground," it is one of the two most typical landforms along with the várzea (floodplain). It occupies about 90% of the Amazon Basin and is covered with tropical rainforest, but the high temperature and heavy rainfall in the climate means that dissolved inorganic components are leached and organic matter is rapidly decomposed, making the soil essentially barren. In the terra firme, which is covered with tropical rainforest, in addition to traditional industries such as the harvesting of natural rubber and chestnuts, abundant forest resources and various mineral resources are being developed.
