Kato Orihei

Kato Orihei
1849-1885 A freedom and civil rights activist from the Meiji period.
Born in 1859. A farmer and pawnbroker. He participated in the Chichibu Konminto Party as a senior member. He became the deputy prime minister during the armed uprising in 1884. He was captured and executed on May 18, 1885. He was 37 years old. He was from Musashi Chichibu District (Saitama Prefecture).

嘉永(かえい)2年生まれ。農民で質屋もいとなむ。秩父(ちちぶ)困民党に幹部として参加。明治17年の武装蜂起(ほうき)の際には副総理となる。捕らえられ,18年5月18日処刑された。37歳。武蔵(むさし)秩父郡(埼玉県)出身。
