…The Japanese military government also had no choice but to adopt Malay as its language policy. In the midst of the rise of nationalism in the 1920s, the Indonesian Youth Congress adopted the Youth Pledge in 1928, which included as part of its resolution that "We Indonesians have one language, Indonesian." With these historical circumstances as a backdrop, the Republic of Indonesia stipulated in Article 36 of its 1945 Constitution that Indonesian be the "national language."
