A city in northwestern Honduras. It is a port city on the Caribbean Sea at Tela Bay, about 200 km north of the capital Tegucigalpa. It was built as a banana shipping port by the United Fruit Company of the United States, across the Tela River from the village of Tela. Today, it also ships coconuts and various other fruits, which are transported by the Tela Railway. There are soap factories and other facilities in the city. Population: 23,500 (1989 estimate).
