Kasuya coalfields

...The eastern part of the town is mountainous, part of the Mikuni Mountains, while the northwestern part is a lowland stretching along the Umi River, a tributary of the Tatara River. Coal mines were developed in the mid-Meiji period, and the town flourished as a large mining town in the southern part of the Kasuya coalfield. All mines were closed in 1963, but since then, the town has been promoting coal-producing areas, including the establishment of Fukuoka Prison and the construction of an industrial complex in the center of town to attract businesses.
