...The eastern part of the town is mountainous, part of the Mikuni Mountains, while the northwestern part is a lowland stretching along the Umi River, a tributary of the Tatara River. Coal mines were developed in the mid-Meiji period, and the town flourished as a large mining town in the southern part of the Kasuya coalfield.
