Usually, when it comes to forward exchange rates, if the forward rate of a foreign currency is higher than its spot rate, it is called a premium, and vice versa. If the two rates are the same, it is called flat, par, or even. For example, when the spot rate (spot exchange/forward exchange) for the yen-dollar exchange rate is 1 US dollar = 235.60 yen and the three-month forward rate is 1 US dollar = 237.50 yen, the US dollar is said to be at a premium against the yen.

通常，先物為替相場に関して，外貨の先物相場がその直物（じきもの）相場より価値が高い場合をプレミアムpremium(打歩)といい，その逆をディスカウントdiscount(割引)という。また，両者の為替相場が同一である場合は，直先（じきさき）フラットflat，パーparあるいはイーブンevenという。たとえば，円･ドル相場について直物相場(直物為替･先物為替)が1米ドル＝235.60円で，3ヵ月物の先物相場が1米ドル＝237.50円のとき，米ドルは円に対して先高(プレミアム)の状態にあるという。
