Ando Tono - Ando Toya

Japanese:
Ando Tono - Ando Toya

A Confucian scholar and Chinese poet of the mid-Edo period. His given name was Kanto, his pen name was Toukabe, his pen name was Higashino, and he was commonly known as Niemon. He was born in Nasu, Shimotsuke Province (Tochigi Prefecture) as the son of Onuma Gensa, a physician of the Kurobane Domain. He was adopted by the Ando clan at a young age and moved to Edo. He first studied under Nakano Kiken (1667-1720), and later became a disciple of Ogyu Sorai, becoming a Confucian scholar. He served the Lord of Kofu, Yanagisawa Yoshiyasu, but resigned from his position due to illness in 1711 (Shotoku 1) at the age of 29. Along with Yamagata Shunan, Tono was one of Sorai's earliest disciples, and it is said that the popularity of Kobunji (classical Japanese writing) advocated by Sorai was largely due to the efforts of Tono and Shunan. He died on April 13, 4th year of the Kyoho era, at the age of 37. As he was poor and had no children, he was buried at Fukujuin Temple in Asakusa by his friends. Thirty years after his death, "Tono Ikou" (1749) was published.
