Mineral name. Also called nepheline. Its chemical composition is (Na,K)AlSiO 4 , with up to 25 mol% KAlSiO 4. It belongs to the hexagonal crystal system and forms hexagonal or dodecagonal columnar crystals, but is often granular or lumpy. It is white, gray, or light brown, or rarely colorless, with a vitreous luster. Specific gravity 2.56-2.67, Mohs hardness 5.5-6. It is a type of rock-forming mineral characteristic of alkaline igneous rocks, and occurs together with feldspars in rocks such as nepheline basalt and nepheline feldspar. It is rarely found in Japan, but it is found in basalt distributed on the coast of the Hamada region of Shimane Prefecture. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
