A type of mica. It often forms large pseudohexagonal columnar or plate-shaped crystals. Crystals with clearly defined external shapes are usually phlogopite. Others form scale-like crystals. End-members are often found in skarns of dolomite origin, and also in ultramafic rocks and kimberlite. Most of what has traditionally been called biotite belongs to phlogopite. It is often found in granite. Those found in metamorphosed stratiform manganese deposits often contain large amounts of manganese, and in rare cases may contain barium. Large, high-quality crystals are used as insulators. The English name comes from the Greek word meaning "fiery," as some species are often reddish in color.
