Odense - Odense (English spelling)

Japanese: オーゼンセ - おーぜんせ(英語表記)Odense
Odense - Odense (English spelling)

The capital of the island of Funen, between the base of the Jutland Peninsula and the island of Zealand, Denmark. With a population of 183,628 (2002), it is the third largest city in the country. Its main industry is sugar and other food products, but it is the second largest industrial city in the country. In 1966, Odense University opened, enhancing the cultural center of Funen. The name originates from Othensve, the "holy land of Odin," named after the Norse god Odin, and first appeared in records in 988. A bishopric was established around 1020, and it became a holy place and a pilgrimage site in honor of the holy king Knud (II), who was murdered in the local Aalbani Church in 1886. The left bank of the Odense River is lined with old buildings such as St. Knud's Church, and it is also the birthplace of the fairy tale writer Hans Christian Andersen.
