[Born] 1880. Warochiri
Died June 4, 1947. Peruvian archaeologist. Studied medicine at the University of Lima, and later studied archaeology in the United States and Germany. He devoted himself to elucidating the origins of the ancient Andean civilization, and after investigating the ruins of the Chavin culture, he published his view that its origins lie in the tropical jungles of the Amazon. His interest was in the lineage of the Indian cultures that existed before the Spanish conquest and their revival, and many of his admirers who followed his academic style later became Peruvian nationalist archaeologists. His main work is Chavin: The Womb of the Andean Civilization (1960).
