An ancient place name for a plain in the center of Asuka, Asuka Village, Nara Prefecture. In the Manyoshu, it is described as "Ookuchi no makami no hara," so it seems that it was once thought of as a plain inhabited by makami, or wolves. In the Nihon Shoki, the entry for the 7th year of the reign of Emperor Yuryaku, it appears that Imaki no Ayano Suetsukuribe, Kurabe, Gabe, and Nishikibe were made to live in Tohara and Makamihara. Makamihara refers to the low marshes around Asukadera Temple, and construction of Asukadera Temple began here in the 1st year of the reign of Emperor Sushun, after the house of Konoha, the founder of the Asuka Kinu no tsukuri family, was demolished.
