A former town in Higashichikuma District, Nagano Prefecture. The main settlement is located in the northeastern part of the Matsumoto Basin, where the Takase River and Azusa River join together to form the Sai River, and the Shinonoi Line passes through the area. The town produces rice and shiitake mushrooms, and also operates a precision machinery manufacturing industry. It is known for cultivating rainbow trout. In October 2005, it merged with Toyoshina Town, Hotaka Town, Misato Village, and Horigane Village in Minamiazumi District to become Azumino City. 42.12 km2 . 9,601 people (2003).
