…Following Kumano, the custom of Oshi developed at Ise Jingu Shrine, where, unlike the former, they would visit parishioners themselves or send magistrates to visit them, without going through local sendatsu (sendai). Ise Oshi were especially called Onshi, and when they visited the provinces, they would bring their parishioners not only prayer hemp but also fans, obi, tea, face powder (Ise face powder), and other items, which delighted them, and they came to have a merchant-like character. Around the Oei period (1394-1428), there were apparently 60 to 70 Oshi in Kumano, including Sonsho-in and Jitsuho-in, and their parishioners were distributed throughout the country, and many even in the far-flung Mutsu region. … *Some of the terminology that mentions "Onshi" is listed below.
