Holbein (English spelling)

Japanese: ホルバイン(英語表記)Holbein
Holbein (English spelling)
A German family of painters active during the Renaissance. Famous members include Hans (c. 1465-1524), who was active in Augsburg, his brother Sigmund (1465-1524), Hans' son Ambrosius (c. 1494-1519/20), and his brother Hans (1497/8-1543), who shared the same name as his father. The father, Hans, was initially a leather merchant and later became a painter. He produced excellent portraits and altarpieces that combined the delicate depictions of Scandinavian painting tradition with bright Italian colors. His works include the altarpiece for St. Sebastianus (16, Alte Pinakothek, Munich) and others. Ambrosius, who studied under his father, lived in Basel from around 1515, and left behind unique works in the form of portraits and woodblock prints. Hans Holbein, the most famous son of the Holbein family, went to Basel with his brother Ambrosius, where he gained fame as a portrait painter and later became the court painter of Henry VIII of England. He is considered one of the greatest painters of the German Renaissance, along with A. Dürer. His works include "Portrait of Erasmus" (23, Basel Kunstmuseum and others).
