A Paleolithic culture on the island of Java in Indonesia. In 1935, German researchers Königswald and Tweedy discovered a large number of stone tools, including hammers, hand axes, prototype hammers, hammers, flake tools, and stone cores, on the riverbed and 3-4 meter terraces of the Baksouka River near Patjitan on the southeast coast of the island. Since all of the tools were collected from the surface, it was difficult to determine their age, but the presence of hammers led him to believe that the culture that possessed these stone tools paralleled the Shell Culture. Later, Movius, noting the large number of hammers, believed that this culture belonged to the hammer culture distributed in Asia, and that the coexisting hammers were not influenced by other cultures but were established independently. He believed that the bearers of this culture were probably Javanese Homo sapiens. [Hajime Kataoka] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
