Pachitan Culture

A Paleolithic culture on the island of Java in Indonesia. In 1935, German researchers Königswald and Tweedy discovered a large number of stone tools, including hammers, hand axes, prototype hammers, hammers, flake tools, and stone cores, on the riverbed and 3-4 meter terraces of the Baksouka River near Patjitan on the southeast coast of the island. Since all of the tools were collected from the surface, it was difficult to determine their age, but the presence of hammers led him to believe that the culture that possessed these stone tools paralleled the Shell Culture. Later, Movius, noting the large number of hammers, believed that this culture belonged to the hammer culture distributed in Asia, and that the coexisting hammers were not influenced by other cultures but were established independently. He believed that the bearers of this culture were probably Javanese Homo sapiens.

インドネシアのジャワ島における旧石器文化。1935年にドイツのケーニヒスワルトとトウィーディは、同島南東岸パチタンPatjitan付近のバクソカ川の川床や3～4メートルの段丘上で、打器、握斧(あくふ)、祖型握槌(あくつい)、握槌、剥片(はくへん)石器、石核など多量の石器を発見した。いずれも表面採集であったため、年代決定は困難であったが、握槌の存在から、これらの石器をもつ文化は、シェル文化に並行すると考えた。のちにモウィウスは多量の打器類に注目し、この文化はアジアに分布する打器文化に属するものと考え、併存する握槌は他の文化の影響によるものではなく、独自に成立したとした。そして、この文化の担い手はおそらくジャワ原人であろうと考えた。
