Political Arithmetik

This book was written by William Petty in the 1670s and published in 1690. Although it is a short work, Petty proposes a method for developing discussions of society "using numbers, quantities, and measures," and actually demonstrates this in relation to a comparison of the national power of England and France at the time. This has made it an important classic in statistics and economics. Furthermore, the field of statistics that began with Petty has generally come to be known as political arithmetic. [Takeuchi Akira]
