A butterfly of the family Lycaenidae in the order Lepidoptera. Forewing length is about 18mm. The hindwings have a long, slender tail. The upper part of the wings is orange-brown, with the tips of the forewings being black. The underside is dark, with two brown horizontal stripes on the forewings and one on the hindwing, each bordered with thin white stripes. The outer edge is lined with reddish-brown eye-like patterns. It appears once a year, from May to June in warm areas and from July to August in cold areas, and flies around trees in the early morning and evening. The larvae feed mainly on beech plants such as Quercus acutissima and Quercus serrata. It is found in Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu, and is distributed in western and northern China, Korea, the Amur region, Tibet, Taiwan, etc. The closely related J. saepestriata is similar to this species, but has many black horizontal stripes on the undersides of both the forewings and the hindwings. The larvae feed on oak trees and Quercus serrata. Adults appear from June to July. They are found in southwestern Hokkaido, Honshu, and Shikoku, and are distributed overseas in Ussuri, northern China, and Korea. The upper side of the Korean silver butterfly Coreana raphaelis ' wings is orange with a black border, but the black area is wider in males than in females, and in some areas the hind wings are completely black-brown. The underside has a row of reddish-brown spots on the inside of the outer edge. The larvae feed on ash trees and Ash trees, and adults appear from late June to July. They are found locally in the Tohoku region (Yamagata, Iwate), and are distributed overseas in the Amur, Ussuri, northern China, and Korea.
