[Japanese political consciousness]
Political consciousness in modern Japan was characterized by its strong influence of the Emperor ideology, which was strengthened in order to counter the Western powers, and the ethos of community, which was preserved amid rapid top-down modernization. As a result, in addition to the axis of progress versus conservatism as in Western countries, axes such as Westernization versus nationalism, and revolutionary fundamentalism versus bureaucratic realism intertwined to weave a complex pattern of political consciousness. During the political crisis from the late 1920s onwards, this became the basis for a major reorganization into revolutionary fundamentalism brandishing the national polity and militaristic nationalism intoxicated by the victory of the invasion of China.
