Akashi Domain

Japanese:
Akashi Domain

A domain located in Akashi County, Harima Province (Hyogo Prefecture). During the Tenbun period (1532-1555), the local lord Akashi Nagayuki's Edakichi Castle was known on the plateau west of the Akashi River, and during the Tensho period (1573-1592), Bessho Yoshichika built Funage Castle on the plains below Shimotsuke. Both were called Akashi Castle. Around the time of Hashiba (Toyotomi) Hideyoshi's (Hashiba Toyotomi) capture of Miki Castle (Bessho Nagaharu) while advancing to subjugate Harima, Hachisuka Masakatsu, who was on Hideyoshi's side, temporarily lived in Funage Castle in 1576 (Tensho 4), and Takayama Ukon in 1578. After the Battle of Sekigahara in 1600 (Keicho 5), Ikeda Terumasa ruled over the entire Harima Province with 520,000 koku of rice. In the same year, Kuroda Nagaoki became the lord of Funakami Castle, but then moved to Akizuki in Chikuzen, where Yukisuke's surviving son, Yoriyuki, took over as a subsidiary castle for Terumasa.

The Ikeda clan of Himeji in Harima Province was transferred to Tottori in 1617 (Genwa 3) during the reign of Mitsumasa, and Honda Tadamasa ruled over the area west of Kako and Innami. On the other hand, Tokugawa Ieyasu's grandson Ogasawara Tadazane was appointed to the Akashi and Miki counties with a fief of 100,000 koku from Matsumoto in Shinano Province, and initially lived in Funakami Castle. The following year, in 1618, he was ordered to build Akashi Castle on Hitomaruyama. After that, Toda Yasunao was appointed to the fief in 1633 (Kan'ei 10), Okubo Tadamoto in 1639, and Matsudaira Tadakuni in 1649 (Keian 2). All three families had a fief of 70,000 koku, but Tadakuni's heir, Shishi Nobuyuki, divided 5,000 koku among his younger brothers. After that, Honda Masatoshi, who came to power in 1679 (Enpo 7), had a fief of 60,000 koku. Masatoshi tried to develop new fields on the Yamate Plateau, but was found to be unkind by the inspectors, and in 1682 (Tenwa 2) he was transferred to Iwase County in Oshu with a new fief of 10,000 koku. In his place, Matsudaira Naoaki, a branch of the Echizen family, came from Echizen Ono and settled there. In 1839 (Tenpo 10), he was given an additional 20,000 koku, giving him a total of 80,000 koku, and his fief extended to the three counties of Akashi, Miki, and Sayo, until the abolition of the feudal domains and establishment of prefectures in the Meiji period (1871).
