...Today, this area is known as Shippo-cho. With Kaji's arrival, cloisonné craft made a great leap forward, and his pupil, Tsukamoto Kaisuke (1828-97), greatly improved the technique under the guidance of the German Gottfried Wagner (1830-92), who came to Japan in the early Meiji period. Furthermore, in Tokyo, Namikawa Sosuke (1847-1910) invented wireless cloisonné, in Kyoto, Namikawa Yasuyuki (1845-1927) developed a distinctive style of cloisonné in the style of Japanese painting, and in Nagoya, Ando Jubei (1876-1953) and others emerged and enjoyed a flourishing craft. ...The main export destinations were North and Central America and Asia. In the Meiji era, the Japanese ceramics industry introduced Western European technology through the German Gottfried Wagner (1831-92), who came to Japan at the end of the Edo period and improved Arita ware. In 1875, Koransha was established in Arita, and in 1904, Nippon Toki (the predecessor of Noritake Company Limited) was established in Nagoya, marking the start of modern ceramics manufacturers. After the Russo-Japanese War, technological innovations such as the shift from firewood to coal as fuel, the mechanization of processes, and the use of Western pigments transformed Japan's ceramics industry from the production of crafts to a modern industry centered on the production of practical items, and large-scale factories began to appear.
