A gold coin that circulated in Islamic society alongside the silver dirham. The plural is danānīr. During the period of the great Arab conquests, the dinar was an imitation of the Byzantine gold coin (denarius), but in 691/2, the Umayyad caliph Abd al-Malik minted the dinar with a legal weight of 4.29 g (varies depending on the place of minting and the period), which became the standard currency until around the 10th century. It was used as a gold coin until the Mamluk period, but during the thriving Mediterranean trade, it functioned as an international currency. It is still used as a monetary unit in Iraq and Yugoslavia. Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
