Charles Du Bos

Charles Du Bos
1882‐1939
French critic. Born into an upper-class family, he was well educated and had a devout soul. For him, criticism was nothing more than an activity that began with an encounter between a work and himself on the horizon of the soul, and deepened the problems discovered there through empathy and introspection; it had almost no professional meaning. The subjects of his collection of essays, Approximations (7 volumes, 1922-37), were international in scope, including Goethe and Peter, and also extended to music and art. He also wrote personal studies on Gide and Constant, but his Diary (9 volumes, 1946-61), in which he kept a record of his daily life of constantly coming into contact with literature and art, and through them, pursuing the aesthetic and spiritual. It can be said that his greatest critical work is his Diary (1946-61).
