Born in France, he studied at the National Institute of Agricultural Research in Paris, and later moved to the United States and joined the Rockefeller Institute. He viewed antibiotics from the perspective of ecological interactions between microorganisms, and made outstanding achievements in the field of infection theory. He is also known for his examination of the concepts of medicine and health, and his theory of civilization, which views the relationship between human civilization and nature from an ecological perspective.
