American scientist and microbiologist. Born in France, he studied at the National Institute of Agricultural Research in Paris, and later moved to the United States and joined the Rockefeller Institute. He viewed antibiotics from the perspective of ecological interactions between microorganisms, and made outstanding achievements in the field of infection theory. He is also known for his examination of the concepts of medicine and health, and his theory of civilization, which views the relationship between human civilization and nature from an ecological perspective. His major works include Man and Adaptation and God Within, but he also wrote critical biographies of scientists such as Pasteur.

米国の科学者，微生物学者。フランス生れで，パリの国立農業研究所に学び，後に米国に渡り，ロックフェラー研究所に所属。抗生物質を微生物間の生態学的相互作用という視点からとらえ，感染論などにすぐれた業績を残す。医学と健康の概念の検討や人間の文明と自然の関係を生態学的観点からとらえる文明論などでも知られる。主な著書に《人間と適応》《内なる神》があるが，他にもパスツールなど科学者の評伝も残している。
