Haiku poet. Born in Nagano Prefecture. Real name Uichiro. Former pen name Itto. Graduated from Hosei University. In 1914 (Taisho 3), he met Takahama Kyoshi and resumed haiku, which he had started as a boy but had stopped. The following year, with the support of Osuga Otsuji, he founded and presided over the magazine Shakunage. He considered "truth" to be the heart of haiku and preached "a sense of nature" and "one verse, one chapter." His style was simple and solemn. He was a great critic of the haiku world and played a warning role. His students included Ono Rinka. His haiku collections include Aran Kusho (1925), Tabibito (1937), and Hakudo (1946).
