Hyuga Nada

The area offshore from the coast of Miyazaki Prefecture facing the Pacific Ocean is called the Hyuga-Nada. The northern part of the prefecture is a ria coast and is part of Nippō Coast Quasi-National Park. The central and southern parts are raised coasts, with a monotonous sandy beach in the central part and a rocky coast with continuous shorelines and beaches in the southern part (Nichinan Coast Quasi-National Park). The Kuroshio Current flows offshore, and the coastal current flows from north to south. The continental shelf is not very wide, at 20 to 30 kilometers. The continental slope offshore has two flat areas, the deeper one is called the Hyuga Offshore Flat. Facing the Pacific Ocean directly, it has strong winds and waves and is easily affected by typhoons. The Hyuga-Nada offshore is also the epicenter of earthquakes. In terms of fishing, sardines and yellowtail are caught in Shimanoura and Kadogawa in the north, while bonito and tuna are caught in Odotsu and Meitsu in the south. Hososhima, Miyazaki, and Aburatsu are important ports.

太平洋に面する宮崎県の海岸より沖合いを日向灘という。県北部はリアス式海岸で日豊海岸国定公園(にっぽうかいがんこくていこうえん)。中部、南部は隆起海岸で、中部は単調な砂浜海岸、南部は磯(いそ)と浜の続く岩石海岸（日南海岸国定公園(にちなんかいがんこくていこうえん)）である。沖を黒潮が流れ、沿岸流は北から南に流れる。大陸棚は20～30キロメートルとあまり広くない。沖の大陸斜面には二段の平坦(へいたん)面があり、深いほうのそれを日向沖平坦面とよんでいる。直接太平洋に面して風波が強く、台風の影響も受けやすい。また日向灘沖は地震の震源地でもある。漁業は、北部は島野浦(しまのうら)、門川(かどがわ)などでイワシ、ハマチ、南部では大堂津(おおどうつ)、目井津(めいつ)などを中心にカツオ、マグロ漁が行われる。細島(ほそしま)、宮崎、油津(あぶらつ)は重要港湾。
