Restio (English spelling)

Japanese: レスティオ（英語表記）Restio

A general term for a perennial plant of the Restioceae family that resembles rush. The underground stems spread horizontally, with degenerated, scale-like leaves at each node, and aboveground stems. The aboveground stems are green, with degenerated, scale-like leaves. Flowers are clustered in clusters at the top of the stem or on nearby branched branches, forming spikelets. The spikelets are enclosed in bracts. Each flower (floret) is small, degenerate, and dioecious (dioecious plant). They have six tepals. Male flowers have three well-developed stamens, while female flowers, which have a pistil with a bipartite stigma, have three sterile stamens.

イグサに似たレスティオ科の多年草の総称。地下茎は横にはい，節ごとに退化した鱗片状の葉をつけ，また地上茎を出す。地上茎は緑色で，葉は鱗片状に退化している。花は茎の頂部やその付近の分枝した枝に多数がかたまった穂状に集まりついて小穂を作る。小穂は苞に包まれる。各花(小花)は小さく退化的で，雌雄異花(雌雄異株)。6枚の花被片を持つ。雄花には発達した3本のおしべが，柱頭が2裂するめしべを持つ雌花には3本の不稔おしべがある。
