1868‐1963 A mixed race American black movement leader. After graduating from Harvard University, he was a professor at Atlanta University (1897-1910, 32-44). During this time, he participated in the Niagara Movement (1905) and the founding of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) (1909), and dedicated himself to the liberation and improvement of black people's status. He also led six Pan-African Congresses held between 1900 and 1945, and was called the father of Pan-Africanism. After World War II, he also showed a strong interest in the peace movement, and in 1950 he became chairman of the Peace Information Center.
