Honjo Mutsuo

Novelist. Born in Hokkaido. His father, a samurai from Saga Prefecture, moved to Hokkaido in 1895 (Meiji 28) and became a pioneer farmer. After graduating from Aoyama Normal School, he worked as an elementary school teacher while publishing novels in coterie magazines. As a member of the Writers' Union of NAPF, he was a prolific writer of fairy tales and educational critiques. In April 1934 (Showa 9), he joined Genjitsu, and in 1936, he also participated in the second edition of Genjitsu and Jinmin Bunko. He attracted attention with White Walls (1934), based on his teaching experience, and his other works include stories about deceased wives and the lives of farmers. In June 1938, he participated in the launch of Enju, and serialized the historical novel Ishikari River (1939-40), which was well received, but he died young of pulmonary tuberculosis. His books include "White Walls" (1935), "Girls and Boys" (1940), "Ishikari Comes to Memories" (1939), "Collection of Honjo Rikuo's Posthumous Writings" (1964), and "Bridges" (1968).

小説家。北海道生まれ。佐賀県出身の士族の父は1895年（明治28）北海道に渡って開拓農民となった。青山師範卒業後、小学校教員を勤めるかたわら、同人雑誌に小説を発表。ナップの作家同盟員として童話や教育評論に健筆を振るった。1934年（昭和9）4月『現実』に参加、36年、第二次『現実』、『人民文庫』にも参加する。教職経験に基づいた『白い壁』（1934）で注目を浴び、ほかに亡妻ものや農民の生活を描いたものなどがある。38年6月『槐(えんじゅ)』創刊に参加し、歴史長編小説『石狩川』（1939～40）を連載、好評を得たが肺結核のため早逝した。単行本に『白い壁』（1935）、『女の子男の子』（1940）、『石狩は懐く』（1939）、『本庄陸男遺稿集』（1964）、『橋梁(きょうりょう)』（1968）などがある。
