French film director. After working as a stage actor and director, he became a film assistant director and then director in 1919 with "Aceldama." He did not produce any notable works during the silent film era, but after the transition to talkies he displayed his technical prowess and produced a wide variety of works. During his heyday, he was particularly well received in Japan with works such as "The Carrot" (1932), "The White Virgin" (1934), "To the Ends of the Earth" (1935), "Our Companions" and "Nostalgia" (1936), "The Notebook of a Ball" (1937), and "At the End of the Journey" (1939). During World War II, he produced films in the United States, and after the war he returned to France, where he continued to produce films such as "The Seine Flows" (1951), "The Happy Don Camillo" (1952), "The Buried Youth" (1953), and "The Murderous Moment" (1955), but his production activities declined with the rise of the New Wave. His subject matter and style were diverse, and he was skilled in tragedies, comedies, suspense dramas, and religious dramas, but at his heart he harbored pessimism, and dramas that began with hope and ended in despair dominated his productions.
