Estonian author. Born into a farming family in Järvamaa, he dropped out of the University of Tartu and began his literary career in Tallinn. His epic novel "Death and Justice" (5 volumes, 1926-33) is the greatest work of Estonian literature. His other works include "The Old Man and the Young" (1903), "The Flies" (1917), "The Master of Kurvoja" (1922), and "I Loved a German" (1935), in which he portrays the sufferings of life with a light and realist approach. エストニアの作家。ヤルバマーの農家に生まれ，タルトゥ大学を中退後タリンで文筆生活に入った。彼の大河小説《死と正義》5巻(1926‐33)はエストニア文学の最高傑作である。ほかに《老人と若者》(1903)，《蠅》(1917)，《クルボヤの主人》(1922)，《ドイツ人を愛した》(1935)などの作品があり，軽妙なリアリズムの手法で人生の苦悩を描いている。【小泉保】
