1878‐1940 Estonian author. Born into a farming family in Järvamaa, he dropped out of the University of Tartu and began his literary career in Tallinn. His epic novel "Death and Justice" (5 volumes, 1926-33) is the greatest work of Estonian literature. His other works include "The Old Man and the Young" (1903), "The Flies" (1917), "The Master of Kurvoja" (1922), and "I Loved a German" (1935), in which he portrays the sufferings of life with a light and realist approach.
