Dupuit, Arsène Jule Étienne Juvénal
Born: 1804. Fossano
Died in 1866. A French civil engineering inspector and mathematician in Paris. A pioneer of the subjective theory of value. In his 1844 paper "On the Measurement of the Utility of Public Works" (De la mesure de l'utilité des travaux publics), he depicted the relationship between price and consumption as a continuous consumption (demand) curve, and used the term "relative utility" to express today's monetary value of consumer surplus. In this way, he derived most of the basic propositions of the subjective theory of value, which has been systematically developed since the marginal revolution. In his 1849 paper "On the Influence of the Charges on the Utility of Means of Communication" (De l'influence des pages sur l'utilité des voies de communication), he applied the above theory to the measurement of the utility of public works, and attempted to use it as the basis for the management of means of transportation.

Born: November 5, 1851 in Le Puy
[Died] July 23, 1923. French politician. Member of parliament for Haute-Loire in 1885. Minister of Education in 1892. Formed a cabinet of opportunist republicans in April 1893, but resigned in November. Shortly after becoming president of the parliament on December 5 of the same year, he gained credibility by calmly declaring "proceed with the proceedings" when a bomb thrown at him by anarchist A. Baillant exploded. He later served as prime minister twice (1894-95, 1898-99) during the period when the Dreyfus Affair divided France in two.

French merchant and adventurer. At the end of 1872, despite protests from the Vietnamese Nguyen Dynasty authorities, he transported contraband weapons via the Song Khoi River (Red River) in northern Vietnam to Yunnan Province in China. When he returned to Hanoi in April 1873 and a conflict arose between him and the Nguyen Dynasty government, the French Governor of Cochinchina immediately intervened. The Governor sent M. Garnier, who together with Dupuy, temporarily occupied key positions in the Song Khoi Delta. This paved the way for France to enter Vietnam (the establishment of the French Indochina Federation) about ten years later.
