A power supply unit converts the alternating current sent to the home into direct current that can be used by a computer. There are several types of power supply units, depending on the voltage and current they can provide. A typical desktop PC often uses a power supply with a capacity of about 200W to 300W. When various expansion cards or OverDrive processors are added, power is consumed by those devices, so the power supply unit needs to have a capacity that matches the expansion. Although it is possible to purchase a power supply unit separately, power supplies are often sold built into the case.
