Idealism
A position that places the standard of artistic creation in ideal beauty that transcends the individuality and chance of nature. It is an attitude opposed to naturalism or realism. Styles that pursue ideal beauty while being based on realism, such as Greek art and Renaissance art, are also considered to be typical of idealism. However, in general, idealism refers not to a specific movement or style, but to the mental attitude of the creator, and various religious art, classicism, romanticism, symbolism, etc. are thought to each contain an idealistic attitude.

Idealism is the attempt to reduce all existence to an idea in the broad sense. From an ethical standpoint, it refers to idealism, which aims to direct all practice toward the realization of some ideal. (→Idea)

制作の規範を自然の個別性,偶然性をこえた理想美におく立場。自然主義あるいは写実主義 (→リアリズム ) に対立する態度をいう。ギリシア美術,ルネサンス美術におけるように,写実性に立脚しつつ理想美を追求した様式も理想主義の典型と考えられる。しかし一般に,特定の運動,一定の様式ではなく,制作者の心的態度をさす言葉であり,各種の宗教美術,古典主義,ロマン主義,象徴主義など,それぞれに理想主義的態度を内包するものと考えられる。

あらゆる存在を広い意味での idea (観念) に還元しようとする観念論。倫理の立場からは,あらゆる実践をなんらかの ideal (理想的な) 実現に向けようとする理想主義をいう。 (→イデア )
