A British dynasty (1461-85). They fought for the throne with the House of Lancaster, a branch of the House of Plantagenet, in the Wars of the Roses. Richard, 3rd Duke of York, who inherited the throne from the Lancastrian King Henry VI, was killed in the Battle of Wakefield in 1460, and his eldest son Edward ascended to the throne the following year as Edward IV (reigned 1461-70, 1471-83), becoming the first king. His son Edward V (reigned 9 April 83-25 June 83) then ascended to the throne at a young age, but his uncle Richard (younger brother of Edward IV) deposed him and ascended to the throne, calling himself Richard III (reigned 83-85). However, he was defeated and killed in battle by Henry Tudor of the Lancastrian faction at the Battle of Bosworth, ending the dynasty with three generations. Henry married Edward IV's daughter Elizabeth, ending the Wars of the Roses and establishing the Tudor dynasty as Henry VII.
