A tall woody plant of the genus P. dulce Benth. of the family Fabaceae, with around 200 species in the tropics. The stipules are often spiny, and the leaves are 2-3 times pinnately compound with a few to many pinnae. The fruits are twisted and coiled, and because of their shape they are sometimes called monkey's earrings. P. dulce Benth. (English names: Manila tamarind, camachile, huamuchil, guamachil, Madras thorn) is native to the tropics of Central America and can grow to a height of over 20m. Its beautiful, spreading branches make it a popular street tree in the tropics. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
