A gastropod shell of the family Celastridae. The shell is 2 cm high and 1.2 cm in diameter. It is cone-shaped with a pointed apex and 9 coils. Each bulge is weak and there is a corner around the last coil. Most individuals are red, but there is considerable variation among individuals, with yellowish brown, dark brown, or light-colored stripes. The inside of the shell opening is pearlescent. It is found in abundance on seaweed in the intertidal zone, feeding on the microscopic organisms on the algae. Individuals found in the Izu region are large. In early summer, it lays agar-like egg masses on the algae. Small, thin, yellowish-green shells with thin brown horizontal stripes are called C. j . hilaris . ニシキウズガイ科の巻貝。殻の高さ2cm,径1.2cmに達する。円錐形で殻頂がとがり,巻きは9階。各膨らみは弱く最後の巻きのまわりに角がある。赤色の個体が多いが黄褐色,暗褐色,または淡色の条斑のあるものなど個体変異が著しい。殻口内は真珠光沢がある。北海道南部から九州に分布し,潮間帯下の海藻上に多く,藻の上の微小生物を食べている。伊豆地方の個体は大型である。初夏に寒天状の卵塊を藻の上に産む。小型,薄質で黄緑色で褐色の細い横縞のあるものをミドリチグサガイC.j.hilarisという。
