Aizen wig - Aizen wig

Japanese:
Aizen wig - Aizen wig

A Japanese film made in 1938 (Showa 13). Directed by Nomura Hiromasa (1905-1979). Based on the novel of the same name by author Kawaguchi Matsutaro, the film depicts the love story between Takaishi Katsue, a widowed nurse with a child, and Tsumura Kozo, a doctor and the son of a large hospital owner. It was serialized in the magazine Fujin Club at the time and gained a good reputation. Seeing the increase in female moviegoers after the Sino-Japanese War, Kido Shiro, director of Shochiku's Ofuna studio, which had an established reputation for producing women's films, hired Noda Kogo to adapt the screenplay and Nomura Hiromasa, who had made hits such as "Hitozumatsubaki" (1936), as director, and produced the film starring the stars Tanaka Kinuyo and Uehara Ken (1909-1991). In the film, during a scene where two vehicles pass each other at Shinbashi Station, the theme song "Tabi no Yokaze" (Night Wind of Travel), with lyrics by Saijo Yaso and music by Manjo Me Tadashi (1905-1968), is inserted as a duet by Kirishima Noboru (1914-1984) and Matsubara Misao (1911-1984). The sound and cutbacks heightened the sad romanticism of the film, and were the driving force behind its huge success. Shochiku went on to produce "Aizen Katsura Zoku" and "Aizen Katsura Kanketsuhen" (1939) with the same staff and cast. All three films became historic hits, appealing to the feelings of Japanese people during the war when they were drafted and their families were separated.

After World War II, three remakes were made: New Aizen Katsura (1948, Daiei) starring Mito Mitsuko (1919-1981) and Ryuzaki Ichirō (1912-1988); Aizen Katsura (1954, Daiei) starring Kyo Machiko (1924-2019) and Tsuruta Koji (1924-1987); and Aizen Katsura and 2 Aizen Katsura (1962, Shochiku) starring Okada Mariko (1933- ) and Yoshida Teruo (1936- ). Romance melodramas in which differences in class or status serve as barriers have been huge hits, including "Katyusha" (1914, Nikkatsu) and the "Your Name" trilogy (1953-1954, Shochiku), and are recognized as a phenomenon that occurs during periods of historical upheaval such as war, or subsequent social change.
