A port city on the Gulf of Guinea in southeastern Ghana. It is located about 25 km northeast of Accra. Developed as part of the Volta River Development Plan, the port is the largest artificial port in Africa, with a water area of 2 km2 , and was completed in 1962. It has a nearly 5 km breakwater, 12 deep-water berths, and a wharf for oil tankers, and can accommodate ships of 14,000 tons. Railways and roads run north through Accra to the Volta River Development Plan area, and west through Kumasi to bauxite mines such as Awaso. The port is a cocoa shipping port. The town is a planned city consisting of industrial parks and housing, and has factories for aluminum refining, oil refining, automobile assembly, chemicals, cocoa processing, etc. Population: 109,975 (1988 estimate).
