Metal oxide semiconductor diode

Japanese: metal oxide semiconductor diode(英語表記)metaloxidesemiconductordiode
Metal oxide semiconductor diode

...A diode (Figure 1) that is constructed by forming an insulating film on the surface of a semiconductor and attaching a metal electrode on top of it. Particularly important is the MOS diode (short for metal oxide semiconductor diode), which is made by forming a silicon dioxide film on a silicon substrate. Rather than being used as a passive diode, it is important as a component of a MOS field effect transistor (abbreviated as MOS FET). When a MOS diode is made using n-type silicon, applying a positive voltage to the metal electrode induces electrons on the silicon surface to form an accumulation layer, so the admittance of the MOS diode becomes the capacitance of a parallel plane capacitor sandwiching a silicon dioxide film. However, applying a negative voltage to the metal electrode depletes the silicon surface, and if the negative voltage becomes even larger, an inversion layer is formed on the silicon surface, so the capacitance decreases, and the capacitance changes with voltage as shown in Figure 2. ...
